The BYD Fangchengbao Tai 3 (also known as the Fangchengbao Titanium 3) is a new all-electric, compact, and rugged five-door SUV that focuses on a blend of urban practicality and off-road capability. It is the first pure electric model from BYD’s performance sub-brand, Fangchengbao (which means “Formula Leopard”).
Design and Features
The Tai 3 features a boxy, rugged, “mecha-style” design with elements like chunky wheel arches and bold lighting, inspired by an “interstellar combat vehicle” concept. It is a 5-seater SUV and notably offers an optional integrated drone system developed in partnership with DJI on its highest-spec variant, which includes a roof-mounted drone storage and launch cabin.
The interior continues the high-tech theme with a focus on smart technology, including:
- A large 15.6-inch infotainment screen (or 12.8-inch on base trims).
- An 8.8-inch LCD instrument panel and available Head-Up Display (HUD).
- A built-in car refrigerator, flashlight, and microphone accessory bundle.
- Advanced driver-assistance systems called “God’s Eye C” (DiPilot 100), offering features like adaptive cruise control and automated parking.
Performance and Drivetrain
The Tai 3 is available in both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations, built on a unibody chassis (EVO+ platform).
- RWD Version: Features a single rear motor with an output of 160 kW (215 hp) and 310 Nm of torque. It achieves a 0-100 km/h time of 7.9 seconds.
- AWD Version: Features dual motors (110 kW front, 200 kW rear) for a combined output of approximately 310 kW (416 hp/422 PS). This variant accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a faster 4.9 seconds.
- Top Speed: The top speed for all variants is around 201 km/h (125 mph).
- Off-Road Capability: Despite its unibody construction, it is designed for varied terrain, incorporating systems like iATS smart terrain recognition (grass, sand, mud, snow) and DiSus-C intelligent damping control for an active road preview. It has approach and departure angles of 25° and 28°, respectively.
Battery and Charging
The Tai 3 uses BYD’s reputable Blade LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery cells integrated into the vehicle structure using Cell-to-Body (CTB) architecture.
- Battery Sizes: The RWD version uses a 65.28 kWh battery, while AWD versions have 72.96 kWh or a 78.72 kWh battery (for the drone version).
- Range: All variants are homologated with the same CLTC electric range of 501 km (around 311 miles), despite having different battery capacities.
- Charging: It supports high-power DC fast charging (up to 237 kW), allowing the battery to charge from 30% to 80% in just 18 minutes.
