The Tesla Model X is a high-performance, all-electric luxury SUV renowned for its distinctive design, advanced technology, and impressive power. It was one of the first all-electric SUVs on the market and stands out with its unique Falcon Wing rear doors.
Key Features & Design
- Falcon Wing Doors: The signature feature of the Model X is its top-hinged rear doors, which lift upwards (like gull-wing doors but with a dual-hinged mechanism) to provide easy access to the second and third rows. They use sensors to prevent them from hitting obstacles in tight parking spaces.
- Seating: The Model X is available in three seating configurations: a 5-seater standard, an optional 6-seater with two captain’s chairs in the middle row, or a 7-seater with a full second-row bench and a third row.
- Cargo Space: The vehicle boasts significant cargo capacity thanks to its “frunk” (front trunk) and large rear cargo area, offering up to 94.5 cubic feet of space with all rear seats folded down.
- Aerodynamics: It has an impressively low drag coefficient for an SUV (0.24 Cd), which enhances efficiency and range.
Performance and Range
The Model X is available in two main variants, both featuring all-wheel drive via multiple electric motors:
- Dual Motor AWD: This configuration offers a substantial EPA-estimated range of up to 352 miles (~566 km). It delivers 670 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a quick 3.8 seconds.
- Tri-Motor Plaid: This high-performance version uses three motors to produce an astonishing 1,020 horsepower. It can reach 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds and covers a quarter-mile in 9.9 seconds. The estimated EPA range is about 335 miles (~539 km).
- Towing: Both configurations have a maximum towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg).
Technology and Safety
The Model X is packed with advanced technology:
- Infotainment: The minimalist interior is dominated by a large 17-inch central landscape touchscreen that controls most vehicle functions. Newer models include a second screen for rear passengers and an available augmented reality head-up display.
- Autopilot and FSD: All models come standard with Autopilot, which enables the vehicle to steer, accelerate, and brake automatically within its lane under active driver supervision. Optional Full Self-Driving Capability adds features like Navigate on Autopilot, Autopark, and Summon.
- Safety: The low-mounted battery pack and strong frame provide enhanced occupant protection. The Model X was the first SUV to receive a perfect 5-star safety rating in every category from the NHTSA.
- Premium Audio: The cabin includes a 22-speaker, 960-watt audio system for a high-quality sound experience.
Charging
Charging is simple using Tesla’s extensive global Supercharger network. You can add up to 179 miles of range in just 15 minutes at a Supercharger station. Home charging with a wall connector typically takes around 14 hours for a full charge.
