The NIO ES8 is the brand’s flagship smart electric full-size SUV, designed to offer premium luxury, spaciousness, and high performance for families, often competing with models like the Audi E-tron and Tesla Model X. It is known for its flexible seating options, advanced technology suite, and the inclusion of NIO’s unique battery-swapping system.
Passenger Capacity and Interior
The ES8 is a large, luxury SUV with five doors (four passenger doors plus the rear liftgate). It is primarily available in two configurations:
- 6-seater: This layout features three rows with a 2-2-2 configuration, often with second-row captain’s chairs that offer extensive adjustment and comfort features, including zero-gravity recline, heating, ventilation, and massage functions.
- 7-seater: This layout uses a standard three-person bench in the second row (2-3-2 configuration). The third-row seats are power-adjustable and designed for adult comfort.
The cabin offers a vast amount of space and premium materials like soft-touch surfaces and dimmable smart glass for privacy. It features an advanced digital cockpit with a 15.6-inch center display and an augmented reality head-up display (AR HUD), along with the interactive in-car AI companion, NOMI.
Performance and Drivetrain
The ES8 is an all-electric vehicle and comes standard with an intelligent dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, built on the advanced NT2.0 or newer NT3.0 platforms.
- Total Power Output: The system delivers a combined power of 480 kW (644 hp/653 PS) and maximum torque of 850 Nm in the current generation.
- Motors: The front motor is typically an induction motor (160 kW or 180 kW depending on generation), while the rear motor is a more powerful permanent magnet motor (240 kW or 300 kW), utilizing silicon carbide power modules.
- Acceleration: The ES8 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 4.1 seconds (or as low as 3.97 seconds in the newest generation).
- Top Speed: The top speed is electronically limited to 200 km/h (124 mph).
Battery and Electric Range
The ES8 is available with several swappable battery options, offering flexibility to users through outright purchase or a Battery as a Service (BaaS) subscription model.
- 75 kWh Battery: Offers a CLTC range of around 465 km (or 400-465 km WLTP).
- 100 kWh Battery: Offers a CLTC range of around 605-635 km (or around 500 km WLTP).
- 150 kWh Battery (Semi-Solid State): This ultra-long-range option, available via the BaaS program, offers a claimed CLTC range of over 900 km (estimated at around 750 km WLTP).
Charging Time
The ES8 supports both traditional charging and rapid battery swapping:
- Battery Swapping: A fully automated battery swap at a NIO Power Swap Station takes just 3 to 5 minutes.
- DC Fast Charging: The ES8 accepts maximum DC charging rates of around 126-140 kW, allowing a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 35 to 45 minutes, depending on the battery size.
- AC Charging: Using an 11 kW AC charger, a full 0% to 100% charge takes roughly 8 to 10 hours depending on the battery size.
