The NIO ET5 is a high-performance, mid-size smart electric sedan designed as a rival to vehicles like the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4. It combines a sleek, coupe-inspired design with advanced technology, dual-motor all-wheel drive, and NIO’s unique battery-swapping capability. A “Touring” (wagon) version is also available.
Key Features & Specifications (2025 Model)
The vehicle features a dual-motor All-Wheel Drive powertrain, delivering a total power output of 360 kW (480 hp) and peak torque of 700 Nm. This allows the ET5 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.0 seconds. It utilizes a sophisticated front and rear five-link suspension with Continuous Damping Control (CDC).
Battery and Range
The ET5 is available with multiple battery options that users can purchase or access via NIO’s subscription-based Battery as a Service (BaaS) model, which enables rapid battery swaps at dedicated stations.
The standard 75 kWh battery offers a CLTC range of approximately 550-585 km (around 342-364 miles). The larger 100 kWh battery increases the CLTC range to approximately 710-740 km (around 441-460 miles). An ultra-long range 150 kWh semi-solid state battery option is also available for flexible upgrades, offering a CLTC range of over 1,000 km (over 620 miles).
Technology and Interior
The ET5 features a minimalist, sophisticated interior with advanced digital systems. The smart cabin is centered around a 15.6-inch AMOLED center display and a 10.2-inch HDR instrument cluster.
NOMI, an in-car AI companion (NOMI Mate 3.0), supports multi-zone voice control and offers interactive features. The immersive digital experience, called PanoCinema, features a 23-speaker, 1,000 W Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 surround sound system and extensive ambient lighting.
For safety and convenience, the car is equipped with a comprehensive suite of over 23 safety and driver assistance features (NIO Assisted & Intelligent Driving). This system, known as Aquila, utilizes an advanced sensor suite including LiDAR, 4D mmWave radars, and a high-resolution camera system.
Unique Selling Proposition: Battery Swapping
NIO’s signature feature is its extensive network of automated Power Swap Stations, primarily in China and expanding into Europe (e.g., Norway and Germany). These stations allow drivers to automatically exchange a depleted battery for a fully charged one in just a few minutes, which is significantly faster than traditional DC fast charging. This also facilitates easier battery upgrades as technology improves.
